A flood would have paid out automatically. A fire, it turns out, doesn't work that way. More than a year after Langdale Moor burned, farmers and businesses near Whitby are still waiting for compensation, while a £3.2 million recovery package went to the national park.
North Yorkshire Water Park is doing half-price weekend entry for locals through September with the code LOCAL50. Only a couple of weekends left before the season shuts, and the water isn't getting any warmer.
Gruffalo Granny arrives at Dalby Forest on 31 October, with free storytelling and a meet-and-greet and no booking needed. The book itself has landed 22 years after The Gruffalo's Child, which is a long time to leave a deep dark wood alone. (Ad)
The Feversham Arms in Helmsley has thermal rooms, a heated outdoor pool and local food, and it's close enough that you can be there before lunch. Better in autumn than in August, when half of Yorkshire has the same idea.

🔥 Wildfire Compensation Still Not Paid. More than a year after the Langdale Moor fire, farmers near Whitby await compensation. A £3.2 million recovery package went to the national park. A flood would have triggered payments automatically.
🍺 Angel Hotel Cuts Prices Thursday. The New Quay Road pub is knocking 7.5 per cent off food and drink for one day, protesting hospitality VAT. Supermarket food carries no VAT at all.

🩷 Pink Hotel Gets Softer Shade. Caedmon House at Whitby's Royal Hotel was painted pink last year without listed building consent. The council has now approved a paler repaint; enforcement could only have restored the original colour.
🧪 Slime Making at the Market. A SEND-friendly workshop runs at Scarborough Market Hall on Saturday at 9 am, £10 a child. Charms and decorations come pre-portioned, with numbers kept small and booking essential.
🗣️ Language Classes Start in Scarborough and Whitby. Spanish, French and Italian courses for adults begin in Scarborough and Whitby from late September, from beginner to advanced. You can sit in on a lesson before paying anything.

🌊 Half-Price Aqua Park for Locals. North Yorkshire Water Park is running half-price weekend entry for locals through September with the code LOCAL50. Only a couple of weekends remain before the season closes.
🛢️ Heating Oil Nearly Doubles. Rural charities want support for households on heating oil, outside the Ofgem cap, with prices up 82 per cent in a year. A 1,000-litre delivery now costs close to £940.
🪂 Bungee Jump for Grosmont Bridge. Moors Railway staff will drop 42 metres from Larpool Viaduct on 20 September to fund repairs to a 180-year-old bridge. Propping is holding it up until winter; the full job costs £800,000.
🎭 Shakespeare Adaptation Heading to Yorkshire. The Stephen Joseph Theatre has shared word of a new adaptation of As You Like It coming to the county in spring 2027. No venues or dates yet.
🚔 Two Arrested Over Town Centre Incident. A man and woman from Scarborough are in custody over an alleged lewd act in the town centre on Monday evening, filmed and shared online. Police are appealing for witnesses.
💷 Council Chief Paid £244,575. Richard Flinton's final pay package before retirement rose again in 2025/26. Council staff earning over £50,000 jumped from 957 to 1,287, while overall headcount fell.
🎞️ Capitol Theatre Hunts Lost Poster. The Capitol Theatre Trust wants to trace the poster from its 1929 opening on Albemarle Crescent, last sold at an antiques market. An open day runs on Saturday, 10 am to 4.30 pm.
🐱 Puss in Boots Cast Announced. The Stephen Joseph Theatre's Christmas production runs 5-31 December, adapted by Nick Lane and directed by Paul Robinson. The pair have handled the SJT's pantomimes since Sleeping Beauty.
🕳️ Boreholes Drilled Across Scarborough. Yorkshire Water has started fourteen boreholes ahead of sewer works at Peasholm Park, Northstead, Valley Road and elsewhere. Some go 80 metres down and will be monitored for a year.
🎰 Whitby Gaming Centre Dims Signs. Admiral has resubmitted lighting plans for a 24-hour gaming centre on Baxtergate after refusal in March. Councillors rejected the conversion outright; a government inspector allowed it anyway.
🔬 Cuts Threaten Boulby Dark Matter Lab. The underground laboratory near Whitby faces a 40 per cent budget cut, putting £587 million of regional benefit at risk. It sits 1.1km down a working potash mine.
