What we collect and why

Newsletter subscribers

If you sign up for our newsletter, we collect your email address and any other details you choose to give us at sign-up. We use these to send you the newsletter and occasional related messages about the publication.

Our email platform records standard delivery and engagement data, including whether an email was delivered, opened, and which links were clicked, along with your approximate location and device or email client type derived from that activity. We use this to measure how the newsletter is performing and to remove inactive addresses.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the foot of every email.

Website visitors

We collect basic analytics data about visits to the site, including pages viewed, referring website, approximate location derived from IP address, and browser and device type. This is used to understand which content is read and how people find us.

Comments

If commenting is enabled and you leave a comment, we collect the name and email address you supply along with the comment itself, and technical data such as your IP address and browser user agent string, which helps with spam detection. Approved comments and the name attached to them are visible publicly.

Accounts

If you create an account on the site, we store the information you provide in your profile. You can view, edit, or delete that information at any time, and site administrators can also see and edit it.

Media

If you upload images to the website, please avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download images from the site and extract any location data held in them.

Cookies

The site sets cookies for the following purposes.

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in a cookie so you do not have to fill in your details again next time. These last up to one year.

If you sign in to an account, we set cookies to keep you signed in and to remember display preferences. These are removed or expire when you sign out.

Analytics and any embedded third-party content may set their own cookies, as described below.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings, though some parts of the site may not work as intended if you do.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content such as videos, images, maps, or social media posts. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if you had visited that website directly.

Those websites may collect data about you, set cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including where you have an account with them and are signed in.

Who we share your data with

We do not sell your personal data.

We share data with the service providers we use to run the publication, which act on our instructions. These include our website host and platform, our email newsletter platform, our analytics provider, and any spam detection service applied to comments.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

We may disclose data where we are required to do so by law.

How long we keep your data

Newsletter subscriber data is kept for as long as you remain subscribed, and for a limited period afterwards so that we can honour your unsubscribe request and avoid re-adding you.

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up comments from the same person can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue.

Account data is kept until the account is deleted.

Analytics data is retained in aggregate.

Your rights over your data

If you are in the UK or the EEA, you have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to have inaccurate data corrected, to have your data erased, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive your data in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

To make a request, email us using the contact address above. This does not extend to data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Where your data is sent

We and the platforms we use to publish the site and send the newsletter operate internationally, so your data may be stored or processed outside the UK. Where that happens, we rely on the safeguards offered by those providers for international transfers.

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
