What we collect and why

If you sign up for the newsletter, we collect your email address and anything else you choose to give us at sign-up. We use it to send you the newsletter and the occasional message about the publication itself.

Our email platform records standard delivery and engagement data: whether an email was delivered and opened, which links were clicked, and the approximate location and device or email client derived from that activity. We use this to see how the newsletter is performing and to remove addresses that have gone inactive.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the foot of every email.

Website visitors

We collect basic analytics about visits to the site: pages viewed, the site that referred you, approximate location derived from your IP address, and your browser and device type. This tells us which articles get read and how people find us. We do not use it to identify you.

Accounts and comments

Signing up to the newsletter creates a member account. We store the email address and name on that account, and a cookie keeps you signed in. You can sign in to update or delete your details at any time.

Comments are open to members. If you leave one, the comment and the name on your account are shown publicly. Your email address is not. You can edit or delete your own comments, and we remove anything abusive or off-topic.

Cookies

We set a cookie when you sign in to keep you signed in and to remember display preferences such as light or dark mode. It clears when you sign out.

Our analytics and any embedded third-party content may set their own cookies, as described below.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though signing in will not work properly if you do.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles may include embedded content such as videos, maps or social media posts. That content behaves as though you had visited the other website directly, so those sites may collect data about you, set cookies and track your interaction with it, particularly if you are signed in to them.

We do not sell your personal data.

We share data with the providers we use to run the publication, who act on our instructions. These are our website and newsletter platform, and our analytics provider.

If you pay us for anything, whether that is a consultation or advertising in the newsletter, your payment is handled by Stripe or PayPal. Card and account details go straight to them, and we never see or store them. We keep a record of the transaction itself for our accounts.

We may disclose data where the law requires it.

How long we keep your data

Subscriber data is kept while you remain subscribed, and for a limited period after you unsubscribe so that we can honour the request and avoid adding you back.

Account data is kept until the account is deleted. Comments are kept while they remain published.

Analytics data is kept in aggregate.

Records of payments are kept for as long as UK tax and company law requires, currently six years.

Your rights over your data

If you are in the UK or the EEA, you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, have inaccurate data corrected, have your data erased, restrict or object to how we use it, or receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it whenever you like.

Email the address above to make a request. It does not extend to data we are obliged to keep for legal or security reasons.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Where your data is sent

We and our platforms operate internationally, so your data may be stored or processed outside the UK. Where that happens, we rely on the transfer safeguards those providers have in place.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the way we work changes. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
