Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week πŸ‘‹

Whitby Crews Tackle Moorland Cabin Fire

Wednesday afternoon on the Moors, a log cabin caught fire. Whitby and Lythe crews put it out with a hose reel jet, a thermal imaging camera and a ladder - a routine enough job, until you think about how much dry ground sits around a cabin on the moors in August.

Closer to town, North Yorkshire Council has admitted it measured school walking routes across private land with no public right of way over it. The policy was meant to bring down a Β£50m annual travel bill, and instead it's produced distances that only hold up if your child is permitted to cut through somebody's field.

On the subject of getting away from all that, Grays Court is a medieval townhouse in the shadow of York Minster - seven rooms, a walled garden, and 3 AA rosette dining, which is more than most of us manage on a Wednesday.

And for a bigger trip, a small hotel on the Herengracht puts you in the Nine Streets with the Anne Frank House and the Royal Palace within easy walking distance - no car, no park and ride, no measuring anything.

🚏 Park And Ride Needs Better Signage. Officials want clearer signs and longer hours at Scarborough's park and ride, which finishes around 5:30 pm - no use to anyone off at seven. Thousands drive in on the A64 and bypass it.

🚌 Bus Factory Strikes Resume. Four hundred Alexander Dennis workers struck over a 4% pay offer on 11-12 August, part of 12 days of action since June. Parent company NFI's quarterly profits rose 46.9% to 104m US dollars.

🍬 Gum Money Heads To Harrogate. Harrogate and Skipton get this year's Β£27,500 gum-removal grant; Scarborough had an earlier round. The national task force reckons funded areas see gum littering fall by up to 86 per cent.
