Whitby's whale bone arch is coming down. The bones on West Cliff, gifted by Barrow in Alaska in 2002, are being removed in September and sent to the University of York, with a £70,000 bronze replica taking their place. Same arch, same view of the abbey through the middle, different material.
Further off, Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood opens at Scarborough Spa on 4 December, co-headlined by Lee Mead and Katie McGlynn, and runs until 3 January. Thinking about panto in August feels daft until you remember how quickly the good seats go.
If you'd rather book something sooner, the Feversham Arms in Helmsley keeps its outdoor pool heated whatever the weather, with a thermal suite indoors and the path to Rievaulx Abbey to walk it off afterwards.
And at the far end of the scale, the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel near Alta in Arctic Norway is rebuilt from ice and snow every single year, beds included. Dog sledding and northern lights trips can be arranged.

🎭 Panto Returns to Scarborough Spa. Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood arrives on 4 December, co-headlined by West End's Lee Mead and Hollyoaks' Katie McGlynn. Two separate legends, one show, running until 3 January.
🐋 Whale Bone Arch Goes Bronze. A £70,000 bronze replica takes over on West Cliff, with the weather-worn originals removed in September. The bones, gifted by Barrow, Alaska in 2002, are heading to the University of York.
🧸 Nursery Approved at Scarborough Hospice. Little Footsteps will take over 340 square metres of Saint Catherine's on Throxenby Lane, Newby, in space vacated by a doctor's surgery. The hospice building runs to 4,500 square metres.
💷 Coast to Keep Local Tax Revenue. Scarborough, Whitby and Filey will fund transport, housing and skills from retained income tax and business rates under new devolution powers. Business rates arrive in April 2027, income tax a year later.
🏊 This Helmsley Hotel Has a Heated Outdoor Pool, Even in Winter. Feversham Arms Hotel keeps it running whatever the weather, backed by the Verbena Spa's thermal suite. Walk it off afterwards on the path to Rievaulx Abbey. Find out more
🌊 Free Sea Safety Sessions Return. Children aged seven to 14 who can swim 25 metres can learn open water survival skills at North Bay, 3 to 12 August. The free programme was set up after a 2015 drowning.
🌉 Whitby Swing Bridge Closes to Cars. The landmark bridge is open to buses and pedestrians only between 10.30 am and 4 pm on weekends until 5 September, plus the Regatta and bank holiday. Goth Weekend closures follow in October.
🗳️ Reform Takes Castle Ward by One. Susan Rumford won the Scarborough Town Council by-election with 251 votes to Labour's 250, leaving the council's make-up unchanged. Turnout was 15 per cent, and three ballots were rejected.
🛟 Lifeguards Mark 25 Years. RNLI teams patrol 44 beaches across North Yorkshire and the East Riding, having pulled 2,165 people from the water since 2001. Around 95 per cent of the job is stopping trouble before it starts.
🚗 Whitby Parking Plan Refused. A Bagdale homeowner wanted to demolish a garden store to enlarge parking behind his Georgian house. Officers and the Council for British Archaeology objected. One car space, one national heritage body.
🕰️ Whitby Church Clock Appeal Launched. St Mary's on the East Cliff needs £60,000 to recast its clock faces, removed in 2023, in time for the clock's 130th anniversary in 2027. The church itself dates from 1110.
🍸 Scarborough Bar Seeks 3 am Licence. Fusion on St Thomas Street wants to open until 3 am at weekends, and 2 am midweek, with alcohol served past 2 am. Residents have until 20 August to comment.
❄️ This Norwegian Hotel Has to Be Rebuilt From Scratch Every Winter. Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, near Alta in Arctic Norway, is recreated entirely from ice and snow each year, right down to the beds. Staff can also arrange dog sledding and northern lights trips for the full Arctic experience. Find out more
🔥 Firelighters Seized at Goathland. A Whitby crew confiscated firelighters from a campfire in dry woodland a day after Yorkshire fire services relaunched their wildfire campaign. Last August's Fylingdales Moor fire covered 25 square kilometres.
🛁 Filey House Approved as Holiday Let. A five-bedroom home on Gap Road can be let to holidaymakers for 42 weeks a year, despite officer concerns about hot tub noise. Hen and stag parties are barred under a no-party policy.
🧄 Whitby's Garlic Stones Baffle Geologists. Whitby Museum's Fossil Day features mysterious fossils found near Whitby in 2021, resembling garlic bulbs joined by tubes. Palaeontologists want beachcombers to find more, so they can pin down where they came from.
