Ten miles off Whitby, the Dominator's crew hooked a 338kg bluefin, then went back out the next day and did it again. Both fish were sold before the boat docked, fetching up to £100 a kilo in London.

Closer to home, Scarborough Sea Swimming CIC has proposed a tidal pool at Children's Corner in South Bay. Feasibility work is done, and marine engineers are involved, which is further than most versions of this idea have ever got. The town's last sea pool closed in 1989.

While that gets sorted, a night away is easier to arrange. The Cookie Jar in Alnwick is a converted convent sitting directly beside the castle, vaulted ceilings and stained glass included, rated 9.6 by the people who've actually stayed there.

Further afield, Sant Francesc Hotel Singular is on a quiet square in Palma's old town, with the cathedral, marina and beach all within a fifteen-minute walk. It also has a rooftop pool.

🎄 Scarborough's Christmas Lights Are Secured. Town councillors have backed a £29,000 contract to install illuminations along Westborough, Newborough and Eastborough, well under the £70,000 set aside. The community grant budget, meanwhile, was cut by 62 per cent.

🚉 Station Revamp Deferred Over Safety. Councillors unanimously deferred North Yorkshire Council's plan for the station forecourt, citing no public drop-off and the risk of pedestrians crossing Westborough. The scheme had been three years in the making.

🚂 Dementia-Friendly Train Returns to Whitby. A reserved carriage on the Whitby to Middlesbrough service offers live music, hand massages and space for carers to talk. Organisers are writing a guide so other rail partnerships can copy it.

🏨 Tourism Tax Worries Coastal Businesses. North Yorkshire Council bosses warn an overnight visitor levy could hit coastal firms hardest, despite the mayor's £50 million pitch. County hotel occupancy is already down on last year.

🚑 Ambulance Crews Appeal for Garden Funds. Staff moving into the new Scarborough Ambulance Station at the end of August are asking donors to fix an unusable outdoor rest area. The Trust has not funded it.
