The Spa Cliff Lift has been carrying people up and down since 1875, when it cost around £8,000 to build. Engineers have now been over the tracks, the carriages and the infrastructure underneath, found problems with all three, and the council has closed it with no timescale for repairs. No date, no estimate, just shut.
Down on the sand, seals are hauling out on both North and South Bay, and rescuers want people, children and dogs to stay a hundred metres back. They come ashore to rest deliberately, so carrying one down to the water isn't a rescue, it's an interruption.

🎄 Christmas Lights Saved For Scarborough. The town council has approved a £29,000 installation covering Westborough, Newborough, Eastborough, Ramshill and Falsgrave, with braids gifted by Scarborough Fair. It budgeted £70,000, and this time it owns the lights outright.
🪜 Museum Steps Finally Getting Fixed. A steel frame will shore up the Grade II listed steps between Museum Terrace and Foreshore Road, described as very poor condition with plants growing through them. That survey was carried out in April 2025.
🪑 Marisco Lounge Wants Pavement Seating. The Sandside cafe and bar has asked North Yorkshire Council for tables and chairs outside its South Bay premises. Objections close on 31 August. It applied for the same thing back in 2024.
🏥 Heat Pumps Approved For Scarborough Hospital. An £8.7 million scheme will install a 1MW heat pump system and strip out the ageing steam infrastructure, cutting roughly 1,200 tonnes of carbon a year. February's 1,085 solar panels manage 80.
🍤 Filey Tapas Bar Seeks Pavement Licence. Oswalds Bar and Kitchen on Belle Vue Street wants to put seating on the pavement for its small plates and cocktails. The application covers three tables and six chairs. Representations close on Monday.
🏙️ A Peaceful Pocket of Central Prague. INNSiDE by Meliá is within walking distance of Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, but tucked away from the busiest streets for a quieter stay. Its excellent breakfast is another reason guests rate it so highly. Find out more
🚌 Buses Added For Eastfield Diagnostic Centre. The 7 and 7A now run to the new diagnostic hub, addressing worries about an out-of-town site. The centre was meant for Scarborough town centre, but no space could be found.
🎨 Mural Extension Approved At West Square. Councillors voted five to one to extend the Grade II listed building's mural, despite objections that the design lacked artistic merit. Planners reminded them they were judging listed building consent, not the art.
