People who live there are watching prices climb and neighbours leave, with something like a quarter of the housing stock now let to visitors in a town of 13,000. Four more were turned down near the Larpool Viaduct this week, which suggests the patience has run out somewhere in the planning department too.

🏘️ Whitby's Holiday Let Problem. Residents say record visitor numbers have driven up house prices and pushed families out of the town. Whitby has around 13,000 residents and an estimated 3,275 holiday lets.
🐕 Dog Bite Appeal in Scarborough. A woman was bitten in the face on Wykeham Street on 24 August, leaving permanent scarring. Police say the dog, a husky or malamute type, ran off towards Manor Road with no owner present.
🧸 A Bear's Guide to Scarborough. A new childrens’ picture book * follows a knitted bear round Peasholm Park, the castle, the cliff lifts, the harbour and the North Bay Railway. The photographs are the author's own, taken on family holidays.
🌊 This Yorkshire Hotel Built Its Spa Around a Private Lake. The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa near Skipton spans 1,400 acres of Dales countryside, with an award-winning spa, three restaurants and grounds wrapped around its own lake. Balcony rooms make the most of the view.
🎺 Ska Night at the Spa. Too Much Too Young brings the music of The Specials, Madness and The Beat to Scarborough Spa on Saturday 21 November. Suite upgrades are available for those whose pogoing days are behind them.
🎬 Capitol Plaza Named Community Asset. The 1929 cinema, later Mecca Bingo, has been nominated as a community asset, with a trust hoping to reopen it as a touring theatre venue. Scarborough once had eleven theatres and music halls; four remain.
🚐 Fewer, Bigger Caravans at Filey. Primrose Valley wants to cut its approved caravan bases from 36 to 21, replacing them with units nearly twice the size. Six central pitches would become a landscaping feature.
🏥 Care Hub Plan Angers Eastfield. Residents have lodged more than a dozen objections to a 60-bed care hub in Eastfield, citing traffic and the loss of the estate's only green space. The children's park promised in 2017 has yet to appear.

🌊 Kelp Farming Off Scarborough. SeaGrown grows kelp four miles offshore on its Kelpedo units, with mayoral funding to turn Yorkshire seaweed into crop biostimulants. The county is aiming to be England's first carbon-negative region by 2040.

☕ Two Dozen Chairs on Huntriss Row. Koko Coffee, open since late July, wants a licence for six tables and 24 chairs on the pavement outside. The council is taking comments until 6 September.
🤫 This hotel is a great choice if Costa Adeje Sounds Great but the Party Scene Doesn't. Guests often mention how calm Hyatt Ziva Jardín Tropical Tenerife feels compared with some of the busier resorts nearby. You still have everything within walking distance, just without quite so much noise around the pool.
🏨 MP and Mayor Oppose Hotel Bid. Alison Hume and Thomas Murray have joined dozens of residents in objecting to plans to designate two Scarborough hotels as emergency accommodation. The Lodge on Valley Road is already in use as such.
🏗️ Whitby Holiday Lets Refused. Plans for four holiday lets near the Larpool Viaduct have been refused after 30-plus objections, with planners citing visual harm to the 1884 landmark. The site is already flanked by holiday accommodation on both sides.
🗳️ Town Council Objects to Asylum Plans. Scarborough Town Council has passed a motion opposing Home Office plans to house up to 1,200 asylum seekers at the former RAF Linton-on-Ouse, near York. The site is 50 miles away.
