North Yorkshire Council has been told to rerun the school transport appeals its own policy created, after MP Alison Hume said the new rules were sending Whitby children out of the county and splitting up families.
The GMB union is warning that more than half of Yorkshire's coastguards could quit or cut their hours if the Maritime and Coastguard Agency reclassifies them as unpaid volunteers from September - despite a court already ruling they're workers, not volunteers. Hume is pressing for a stop and a proper consultation.
Meanwhile, councillors look set to approve another delay to the Eastfield link road and bridge, first outlined in 2013, letting 693 more houses at the 1,300-home site fill up before it's built.
For something that did get finished on time, Gilpin Hotel in Windermere has added Spa Suites with their own sauna and steam room, on top of the twenty-two rooms that already come with a private hot tub.

🚌 School Run Splits Siblings. MP Alison Hume says North Yorkshire Council's new transport rules send Whitby children outside the county while splitting up families. The council must now apologise and rerun appeals - the very appeals its cost-cutting policy created.
🏖️ Whitby Beach Clean Nets 100kg. Sixty volunteers, some travelling from as far as Leeds and Bradford, hauled 324 pieces of plastic and 250 cigarette butts off the sand for the second Coastal Wealth beach clean. For several on the coach from Leeds, it was their first ever sight of the sea.
🪩 Last Call For ABBA Night. Thank ABBA For The Music takes over the Spa Theatre this Saturday, 11 July, for anyone still chasing tickets to the tribute show. Whether Dancing Queen gets an encore remains to be seen.
☀️ Yellow Heat Alert For The Coast. A UK Health Security Agency warning covers Yorkshire and the Humber from Wednesday until Sunday evening, flagging risks to vulnerable people and increased strain on local services. London and the Midlands, meanwhile, are on amber.
🌉 Eastfield Bridge Delay Set For Approval. Councillors look set to let Kebbell Developments push back building the promised link road and bridge, allowing 693 more houses at the 1,300-home Eastfield site to be occupied first. The bridge was outlined back in 2013 and still isn't built.

🏠 Nine-Bed HMO Plan Refused. A five-bed house on Gladstone Street was set to become a nine-person HMO, but planners said no over concerns for the area. It would have been the fourth HMO on the same 200m stretch.
🏗️ Council Eyes Homes Deal With Developer. North Yorkshire Council could enter a joint venture with Lovell Partnerships to build on land it already owns in Whitby and Eastfield, including 226 affordable homes. The council's own target is 4,000 new homes a year - this deal delivers a fraction of that.

🎪 Seafest Returns For Scarborough 400. Three free days of live music, food stalls and street performers take over the Spa and South Bay from 17-19 July, with fireworks on Saturday night. Alongside chef demos from names like Ryan Riley BEM, there's also a Lego model of Scarborough Spa.
🐔 New Shed For 20,000 Chickens, Same Flock. A poultry farm near Filey wants to build a 50-metre unit to meet new welfare stocking standards. Despite the eye-catching number, the total birds on site won't increase - they're simply being spread out further.
🏛️ Scalby Hall Listed, Not Saved. Newby and Scalby Community Hall has been listed as an asset of community value after residents campaigned against its 300,000 pound sale. The listing won't reverse the sale.
👮 Operation Coastline Returns For Summer. Humberside Police has restarted its seasonal patrols in Bridlington and along the coast, aiming to head off antisocial behaviour and promenade bike nuisance before it starts. The stated goal is reassurance and early intervention rather than crackdowns.
🍺 Victoria Road Pub Reopens As The Cambridge. The former Spa pub has had a 150,000-pound refit, with new landlords Andrea Allison and Mike Sadler bringing back quiz nights, karaoke and Sunday blues sessions. It's run by the old Cask Inn team, back after a year on a temporary licence.
🔥 Fire Crews Called To Malton Hospital. Multiple crews are on scene after a fire broke out in the grounds, with patients, visitors and staff evacuated. No injuries have been reported, but the Urgent Treatment Centre is closed, and appointments are being rearranged.
🏛️ Council Wants To Hand Over Local Assets. North Yorkshire Council is drawing up a formal "community transfer policy" letting parish and voluntary groups take over running local facilities. So far the only examples are Knaresborough's market and Ripon Town Hall - nothing on the coast yet.
