Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week 👋
Scarborough's deckchair trail was supposed to celebrate local artists. Instead, illustrator Hannah Grahamslaw discovered AI had done the job for them, unpaid and uncredited. The council's promising to do better "next time," which won't be much comfort to anyone who could've used the commission this time.
Elsewhere, a young goose at North Yorkshire Water Park was found with a crossbow bolt in its neck. Nobody's been charged, but somebody in the area owns a crossbow and apparently thought a public water park was a fine place to use it.
And Nigel Farage has picked up a new title on our patch: Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead, the ceremonial post that let him resign as an MP without technically resigning. Peasholm Park now has a plaque commemorating the role, for anyone who wants to see it in person.
For something further afield, the Lodore Falls Hotel sits right on the water's edge in Borrowdale, with Catbells and the Falls both an easy walk from the door. The outdoor heated pool and spa look straight out over Derwentwater, which is the sort of view that makes a long drive feel worth it.

🎨 Local Artists Slam AI Deckchair Trail. Illustrator Hannah Grahamslaw says the Scarborough deckchair trail used AI designs for work she'd normally be paid to do. The council says it'll welcome local creative input - for next time.
💰 Where Scarborough 400's Money Comes From. Of the £156,000 spent so far, £100,000 came from a Shared Prosperity Fund sculpture commission and £30,000 from Arts Council England; Visit North Yorkshire chipped in £23,000, plus £3,000 for marketing.
⚠️ Gosling Injured By Crossbow Bolt. A young Greylag Goose was found with a crossbow bolt in its neck at North Yorkshire Water Park in Wykeham, prompting rescuers to warn a crossbow was fired in a public space.

🌉 Whitby Swing Bridge Closure Drags On. Vehicle access stays shut until Friday, July 17. Pedestrians lose the bridge from 6 pm Monday to 2 am Tuesday for river traffic - but the shuttle bus stops at midnight, two hours early.
🏛️ Yorkshire Coast Misses Culture Shortlist. None of the five towns - Scarborough, Whitby, Bridlington, Driffield, and Pickering - made the UK Town of Culture 2028 shortlist. 398 towns entered; the 15 that made it each get £60,000 to develop their bid.

💧 Yorkshire Water CEO Paid £660k Bonus. The payment to secure new investors comes as the company is set to be downgraded to a one-star Environment Agency rating. Steve Crawford, whose Scarborough surfing school closed due to pollution, called it "appalling."
