Scarborough Group International says the Brunswick cinema plan is still on track. The company behind the town centre development has moved to deny rumours of financial trouble, confirming the multiplex remains part of the scheme as things stand. It's one of several moving pieces in a development that's been years in the planning, and this week's update is the clearest word yet that it isn't stalling.
Yorkshire Water has issued its usual summer reminder: stay out of the reservoirs, rivers and lakes, however tempting they look in this heat. The warning that cold water shock can strike even when the air temperature is high is worth passing on to anyone with children heading for the becks or the North Bay this week.
If a break's more your speed, H10 Conquistador in Playa de las Americas has just finished a full interior refit - bright, modern, with a nautical touch throughout. The promenade sits right outside the door, with beaches, shops and a spa all within easy walking distance.
Closer to home, Goldsborough Hall near Knaresborough has stood for four hundred years and once housed a Royal Princess. It's still a working stately home today, with an AA three-rosette restaurant and grounds built for a slow wander. Something to know about if you fancy somewhere with a bit of history behind it.

🎬 Developer Denies Brunswick Cinema Is In Trouble. Scarborough Group International has denied rumours of financial trouble, insisting its Brunswick multiplex cinema plan remains on track. Nothing reassures a town like an unprompted announcement that all is well.
🌊 Yorkshire Water Warns Against Wild Swimming. Yorkshire Water is urging families to stay out of reservoirs, rivers and lakes this summer, warning cold water shock can strike even in a heatwave. The reservoirs, as ever, remain strictly off-limits.
⚓ Yorkshire Coastguards Win Fight to Keep Pay. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has dropped plans to strip Yorkshire coastguard officers of hourly pay for call-outs and training. More than half said they would have cut their hours or walked away entirely.

🚨 Second Arrest Over Rough Sleeper Attack. A 41-year-old man from Leeds remains in custody after an irritant was thrown at two rough sleepers on Ramshill Road, leaving facial injuries. Police believe the pair were targeted, not picked at random.
🥃 Yorkshire Whisky Maker Turns Ten. Spirit of Yorkshire in Hunmanby is marking ten years of distilling with a 10-year-old single cask whisky, launching at its Open Weekend on August 1-2. Only 192 bottles exist, reserved for £250 masterclass ticket holders.
🫖 East Pier Tea Pot For Sale. The Tea Pot on East Pier is up for sale after 50 years in the same family, with owners Julie and Marvin Smith retiring. Fifty years of trade, now a guide price of £600,000.
🍻 Filey Pub Applies for Pavement Seating. Fado & Tide on Murray Street has applied for a licence to place tables and chairs outside on the pavement. Objections must be lodged with North Yorkshire Council by July 24.

💼 Minister Praises Grand Hotel's Jobcentre Work. Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson visited the Grand Hotel to praise its Jobcentre partnership, in a sector making up 17% of Scarborough's job opportunities. The hotel's own manager admits hospitality is in crisis.
🕰️ John Wherritt Closes After 181 Years. The Eastborough shop, run by the same family since 1845, closes for good on Saturday. It opened the same year rubber bands and self-raising flour were invented.
🎰 Whitby Arcade's Roof Repairs Approved. Funland and Fun City Amusements on Pier Road had already replaced their roof before applying for permission. Councillors approved it anyway, despite concerns over uPVC tiles beside a Grade II listed neighbour.
