Cllr Stacy Bolton has resigned from the Reform-led council, citing personal circumstances - a move that could trigger a by-election in the Castle division before September. She attended five of ten full council meetings and one of four finance committee sessions.
North Yorkshire's new waste centre registration scheme is doing what it was designed to do - targeting out-of-county visitors who account for one in six tip users and cost taxpayers up to £400,000 a year. With 163,000 sign-ups processed and nobody turned away yet, the quieter concern is whether tighter enforcement will shift the problem from the tip to the roadside.
North Yorkshire Council is also drawing up its first-ever countywide local plan, with a government target of 4,000 new homes a year across the county. Adoption is pencilled in for 2029, which leaves plenty of time to talk about it.

🗑️ Fly-Tipping Fears as Tip Rules Change. North Yorkshire's new waste centre registration system has processed 163,000 sign-ups since launch, with no motorists turned away yet. The scheme targets out-of-county users - currently one in six visitors - costing taxpayers up to £400,000 a year.
🥊 Eastfield Boxing Club Needs a Corner. Westway Boxing Club in Eastfield is seeking £350,000 from North Yorkshire Council to complete a £700,000 expansion that would add a full-sized ring, cafe, and classrooms. The quote is only guaranteed until the end of June - every other tender has come in above £1 million.

🔥 £3m to Heal the Langdale Moor Wildfire. Government funding will go to the North York Moors National Park to restore moorland devastated by last summer's wildfire at Langdale Moor, including peatland species and public rights of way. The blaze burned for more than 40 days and at its height covered nearly 10 square miles.
🏮 Moonlight on the Lake Returns to Peasholm. The lantern and illuminations event at Peasholm Park is back on October 23 and 24, this year marking Scarborough 400 as the town celebrates its history as England's first seaside spa resort. More than 10,000 people attended last year - tickets are £3 for adults, free for under-15s.
🎆 Seafest Ends With a Bang at the Spa. Scarborough Seafest runs free across the weekend of 17-19 July, with a firework display at 9.45 pm on the Saturday followed by the Sunbeam band headlining in the Spa Grand Hall. Three days, no entry fee.

🚽 Yorkshire Water Wants to Do Right by Scarborough. Yorkshire Water has opened a public consultation on multi-million-pound investment in Scarborough's wastewater network, with drop-in events at Scarborough Library on June 11, and at 12 Lower Clark Street on June 15, both 4-7 pm. Feedback is also available online via the "Doing Right by Scarborough" page on the Yorkshire Water website.
🌊 Two Continents, One Weekend. For a city break with proper scale, the Four Seasons Bosphorus is a restored Ottoman palace in Istanbul with hammams, an outdoor pool, and a private jetty. The strait outside is the border between Europe and Asia. A break with a difference.
🚁 Stone Cold Engineering at Roseberry Topping. The National Trust and North York Moors National Park are airlifting stone by helicopter to complete the final phase of footpath restoration on the hill. This year's work covers six paths and adds 1.4 kilometres of improved surface.
🚂 The Tornado's Coming to Pickering. The Peppercorn A1 locomotive Tornado returns to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from July 27 to August 8, with services departing Pickering. It was the first new-build steam locomotive on the British mainline in over half a century when it was completed in 2008.
⚽ Athletic Are Coming Home. Scarborough Athletic return to the Scarborough Sports Village on July 25 with a pre-season friendly against Barnsley. Last season, structural issues with the pitch sent them to Bridlington for their home fixtures.
🪶 Two Seagulls Shot in Filey. North Yorkshire Police is appealing for information after two seagulls were found shot near Muston Road and Reynolds Street on June 3. Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 12260102718, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
⚓ Ten-Year Plan for Scarborough, Whitby and Filey Harbours. North Yorkshire Council will present a 10-year harbour strategy to its executive on June 16, covering investment, offshore wind opportunities, and regeneration across Scarborough, Whitby, and Filey Coble Landing. The £10m Whitby Maritime Hub on Endeavour Wharf is already nearing completion.
