The most unusual arrival in Scarborough this week didn't come by train. A corn snake turned up slithering out of a Ford Fiesta headlight on Friday, having spent the previous 20 miles coiled around the engine block - entirely uninvited, apparently unbothered. Dave Bigsby of Lilly's Reptile Rescue took two hours to free it; the owner has since been found.
Also on Friday, two vehicles had a rather less dignified arrival at North Bay. A van and a Range Rover were caught by the rising tide while collecting jet skis on the sands. The coastguard confirmed the owners were safe and well, then left them to sort out the rest themselves.
On slightly drier ground, Scarborough's tourism board has written an open letter to Mayor David Skaith urging him to scrap a proposed overnight visitor levy. A £2-a-night charge could raise £52.2 million across the region - but the board's concern is that it would simply redirect holidaymakers to Bridlington, which wouldn't pay a penny of it.

Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume is pushing the Government to license short-term holiday lets, warning they are forcing long-term residents out of towns like Whitby. North Yorkshire already has more than 8,000 second homes - the highest count in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
🔥 Fylingdales Fire Report Published. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has released its debrief on last summer's Fylingdales Moor wildfire, a blaze that stretched more than 20 kilometres and required air quality monitors in Scarborough. It is believed to have been started by cooking or a naked flame.
🐦 Scarborough Crew Rescues Stuck Seagull. A Scarborough fire crew turned out Thursday morning to free a seagull tangled in wire mesh on Avenue Victoria, deploying a 9-metre ladder to reach it. The bird was left in the care of a responsible person.
🏛️ Community Hall Sale Referred to Watchdog. Campaigners have asked the Charity Commission to review the sale of Newby and Scalby Community Hall, after the trust sold the 1922 village asset to a food hall company for £300,000. The hall has hosted NHS blood donation sessions and community groups for over a century.
🥃 Yorkshire's First Whisky Turns Ten. Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in Hunmanby is marking a decade of distilling with a limited run of 2,016 bottles drawn from its earliest casks, including Cask 001 filled in June 2016. The distillery was named one of the world's top 50 spirits producers last year.
