Around 400 workers at Scarborough's Alexander Dennis plant are walking out for a week after rejecting a 4% pay offer. Since 2021, RPI has risen 35.1% while wages at the plant rose 15.3%. The union and the company will no doubt each have a view on what those numbers mean.
With temperatures pushing demand well above normal, Yorkshire Water is asking customers to use less. Monday alone saw 1.485 billion litres used across the region, 150 million above the seasonal average. That's enough to supply Leeds for a day, which gives you some sense of where things stand.
Humberside Police have a new approach to illegal e-bikes and scooters along the Yorkshire Coast: drones. Rather than trying to intercept riders in the moment, they follow them from the air until they stop, then move in. A fair number of those being caught are aged 13 to 15.

🏖️ Scarborough Tests Faster Beach Water Checks. Volunteers in South Bay are being trained to collect water samples as part of a new citizen science project backed by Yorkshire Water. A rapid test can flag bacterial risk in 13 minutes; the official result takes days. Yorkshire Water calls faster testing "the Holy Grail."
💧 Yorkshire Under Pressure in the Heat. Yorkshire Water is urging customers to cut back as Monday's demand hit 1.485 billion litres - 150 million above the seasonal average, enough to supply Leeds for a day.

⛽ MP Vows to Close Fracking Loophole. After North Yorkshire Council rejected a 125ft rig planned for Burniston, Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume is pushing to amend the Energy Independence Bill to ban lower-volume extraction methods. The UK currently holds 66 live fracking licences.
🚁 Drones Deployed Against Illegal E-Bikes. Humberside Police are using a new drone fleet to track illegal e-bikes and scooters along the Yorkshire Coast, following the rider to wherever they stop before moving in. Many of those caught are aged 13 to 15.
🎣 Free Seafest Returns to the Spa in July. The Spa is hosting a free weekend of food and entertainment from 17 to 19 July. Whether the Spa lift will be working by then remains, as one local put it, an open question.
🏦 Whitby and Filey in Line for Banking Cash. A £1.2 million fund offering grants of up to £400,000 has launched to restore physical banking services in rural towns, including Whitby and Filey. For some Whitby residents, a banking trip currently takes up to three hours. Applications close 30 September.
🏰 Sleep in a building older than the Magna Carta. Grays Court in York's Minster Quarter has been continuously inhabited since 1080, which makes most "historic" hotels look like newbuilds. There's a walled garden tucked away from the road and a restaurant with 3 AA rosettes. Check it out
🐋 Whitby Whalebone Arch Gets Its Close-Up. Sky Arts' Landscape Artist of the Year filmed at the Whalebone Arch on Monday, with contestants competing to paint the landmark under co-host Fearne Cotton's watch. The winner receives a £10,000 commission - plus £500 towards art supplies.
⚡ Grid Warning Issued in Summer First. The National Energy System Operator issued an electricity margin notice on Wednesday evening - the first such alert in summer - as high demand met low wind generation and reduced continental supply. Electricity prices briefly surged beyond £550 per megawatt hour.
🍽️ WHISH Brings Boat Trips and Hot Meals This Summer. Whitby charity WHISH is running more than 25 FEAST sessions across the holidays, including visits to East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre, boat trips, and sports - every child gets a hot meal. Places are free for children on benefits-related free school meals.
🌊 Councillors Push for Dedicated Coastal Minister. A cross-party group is calling on the government to appoint a standalone minister for rural and coastal communities rather than tagging the brief onto an existing department. MP Alison Hume backed the proposal, arguing a sole objective would "actually get something done."
🏡 Pickering Estate Approved Despite Objections. North Yorkshire councillors have provisionally backed a 150-home development off Whitby Road, despite Yorkshire Water flagging that local sewers lack capacity. The council had little choice as it is required by government to demonstrate a five-year housing land supply.
