Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week ๐Ÿ‘‹

North Yorkshire ranks 142nd out of 151 authorities for per-pupil school funding - and fewer than half of local secondary schools were rated good or outstanding in 2025, against a national figure of 73 per cent. The numbers have been there to see for a while. What happens next is less clear.

Elsewhere on the council's plate, plans for the West Pier have finally taken shape - ยฃ15 million of new flood-resilient buildings, kiosks, a public plaza, and decent toilets. ยฃ1.7 million has already been spent.

On a different note entirely, Scarborough Theatre Company brings Agatha Christie's The Mirror Crack'd to Queen Street Methodist Church from 12-14 June. Last year's run sold out.

If you're thinking about a break in the North Yorkshire countryside, the Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa in Helmsley has a heated outdoor pool and suites with direct pool access.

All that and more below.

What happens when "just moisturizer" isn't cutting it anymore?

Most moisturizers are doing one job: hydrating your skin. But hydration alone isn't enough to stop your skin from changing over time. The appearance of fine lines and dullness increase, and the skincare routine that worked at 35 may not be delivering the same results a decade or two later.

That's not a coincidence โ€” with age, the cellular processes driving visible skin aging accelerate in ways that hydration alone can't keep pace with. Most skincare was never designed to address that. OS-01 FACE was.

Developed by longevity scientists after more than a decade of research, it's the first topical designed to address a leading driver of visible skin aging โ€” not just the symptoms of it. Clinically shown to improve visible firmness in 96% of users and the appearance of wrinkles in 87% in just 12 weeks.

Real skincare science, designed for your skin at every age.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Scarborough Life

๐Ÿ“‰ Local Schools Falling Behind on Funding. Only half of Scarborough and Whitby's secondary schools were rated 'good' or 'outstanding' in 2025 - well below the national figure of 73 per cent. North Yorkshire secondaries rank 142nd out of 151 authorities for per-pupil funding.

๐Ÿ’ฐ West Pier Gets a ยฃ15m Makeover. North Yorkshire Council has unveiled plans to restore the crumbling West Pier with new flood-resilient buildings, kiosks, a public plaza, and better toilets. Of the ยฃ15 million total, ยฃ1.7 million has already been spent.

๐Ÿ’ฃ Seven Shells Found on the Moors. Whitby police and military EOD recovered seven tank shells from the North York Moors on Sunday - a reminder that Fylingdales and Langdale Moor still hold relics of their military training past. All seven turned out to be solid shot, non-explosive.

๐Ÿจ If you're after a spa break in the North Yorkshire countryside, Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa in Helmsley has an award-winning spa, heated outdoor pool, fine dining using local Yorkshire produce, and suites with direct pool access. See what it has to offer.

๐ŸŽต Who Pays the Piper? North Yorkshire councillors have been debating why Peasholm Park's bandstand musicians get paid while performers on other bandstands across the county don't. The answer: Peasholm is a paying attraction, so the band is part of the offer.

๐Ÿ•บ Whitby's 60s Weekend Is Back. Steve Ellis and Paul Jones headline three days of live music at Whitby Pavilion this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The festival is in its 21st year.

โš“ Whitby Maritime Hub Costs Rise Again. Councillors have approved a further ยฃ950,000 for fit-out works at the Whitby Maritime Hub - on top of the ยฃ17.1 million already awarded by government. The building is largely complete, with tenants already secured.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Wilsons Takes On a Century-Old Hall. The owners of Wilsons Food Hall in Seamer have won the tender for Newby and Scalby Community Hall, a 4,000 sq ft venue that has served the village since 1922.

๐ŸŒฑ Growing Food, Feeding Scarborough. GROW Scarborough and CaVCA are inviting locals to their community garden at The Street during Great Big Green Week, 6-14 June. Everything harvested there on Thursdays goes straight to Scarborough Community Fridge.

๐Ÿ  SEA LIFE Staff Rack Up Six Nominations. Four employees at the Scarborough SEA LIFE Centre have been shortlisted across a string of regional and national awards, including the Young Professionals Awards 2026 and the national Staffordshire University Apprentice of the Year.

๐ŸŒฎ Filey's Food Festival Is Back On. After the April edition was cancelled by Storm Dave, 80 stalls return to the Evron Centre and Crescent Gardens this Saturday and Sunday, 10 am-5 pm and 10 am-4 pm. Free entry.

โ˜€๏ธ A Hot Summer Is Looking More Likely. The Met Office's three-month outlook points to an increased chance of heatwaves this June, July and August, with drier and warmer conditions expected from mid-month. It is 50 years since the summer of 1976.

๐ŸชŸ Grade II Listed, Single Glazed. Stephen and Joanna Draycott's application to fit double-glazed windows in their Royal Crescent Court flat in Filey has been refused by North Yorkshire Council on heritage grounds. The building has been there since 1851.

๐ŸšŒ Scarborough to Build Edinburgh's Buses. Alexander Dennis will manufacture 60 new double-deckers for Lothian Buses at its Scarborough facility, after the company's Falkirk site was shut. A further 40 zero-emission vehicles may follow, subject to Scottish Government funding.

๐Ÿ”ช Miss Marple Comes to Queen Street. Scarborough Theatre Company brings Agatha Christie's The Mirror Crack'd to Queen Street Methodist Church from 12-14 June, with performances at 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm. Last year's production sold out.

๐Ÿšป Scarborough's Town Centre Loo Problem Runs On. After the Brunswick Centre closed to the public, no replacement toilets have materialised in Scarborough town centre - despite a community scheme, council talks, and a frustrated mayor. Even temporary cabin loos would cost over ยฃ100,000.

๐Ÿš‚ The Moors Railway Is Running Again. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has reopened its full 24-mile Pickering to Whitby route after temporary repairs to Bridge 42, backed by a ยฃ50,000 National Park donation. Permanent works are not scheduled until winter 2026.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Filey's Clifftop Lookout Seeks to Stay. The National Coastwatch Institution has applied to keep its Tango 3 trailer on Royal Parade, Filey, for another two years. Since 2022, its volunteer watchkeepers have initiated 12 incidents - one formally recorded by the RNLI as lives saved at sea.

๐Ÿฅ Greggs and a Gym for the Old Magnet Site. The derelict Magnet Kitchen showroom on Seamer Road is set to become a Greggs, a PureGym, and a third unit after plans were approved. Planners found no suitable town centre alternatives - PureGym noted it had gaps in provision in coastal areas.

๐ŸšŒ Scarborough Gets a Guided Bus Tour. East Yorkshire Buses has launched a 55-minute open-top tour departing Scarborough Railway Station hourly on weekends and school holidays until 6 September, taking in the Castle, Peasholm Park, and the Spa for ยฃ9 adults and ยฃ4.50 concessions. Bus ticket holders get 10% off the North Bay Railway.

๐Ÿก Two Houses Refused to Stop the Next Two. North Yorkshire Council has blocked a proposal for two homes on West Lane in Snainton partly on conservation grounds - and partly because approving them would make future refusals harder to justify.

๐Ÿš‚ A Free Railway Exhibition Is Coming to Scarborough. The Railway 200 Inspiration train - which has already drawn over 90,000 visitors on its national tour - arrives at Scarborough station from 20 to 22 June. Tickets are free; booking in advance is recommended.

๐Ÿชจ Scarborough's 1830 Steps Are Falling Apart. North Yorkshire Council has submitted a revised plan to rebuild the Grade II listed Museum Steps up to Cliff Bridge Terrace, where a survey found large gaps, settlement, and vegetation growing through the stonework. No decision date has been set.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Oliver's Mount Road Shut for Seven Years and Counting. Jackson's Lane - the main access route to Oliver's Mount race circuit - has been closed since 2018, and councillors are still waiting on a timetable for a fix. ยฃ780,000 has been committed to design development so far.

โญ Corfuโ€™s top-rated luxury stay โ€“ Ikos Odisia

When TripAdvisor travellers rank a hotel as the number one place to stay in Corfu, it's usually for good reason. Ikos Odisia is set in a secluded bay on the Ionian coast, backed by forest and elevated above its own private stretch of shoreline, giving it an away-from-it-all feel from the moment you arrive.

Once youโ€™re there, itโ€™s the kind of place where you donโ€™t feel any pressure to do much at all. Most days can be as simple as spending time by the water, enjoying the views, and letting everything tick along without thinking about plans or times. The focus is on being comfortable and relaxed rather than being kept busy.
