The town and Whitby now carry North Yorkshire's highest crime rate, at 87.56 offences per 1,000 people, with shoplifting alone up 27 per cent on last year. Make of that what you will.
Staying with things that aren't quite working, the county's environment chief Richard Foster has admitted Scarborough's refuse collection remains a problem two years after the merger - everywhere else, he says, is sorted.
And just weeks after the Burniston gas rig was refused, Mayor Thomas Murray says he'd back fracking as long as it stayed clear of communities - a position campaigners, mindful of 1,600 objections, found hard to square.

🚨 Crime Capital of the County. Scarborough and Whitby now carry North Yorkshire's highest relative crime rate at 87.56 offences per 1,000 people. Shoplifting alone jumped 27 per cent, from 957 cases to 1,259.
🗑️ Scarborough's Bins Still Lagging. North Yorkshire's environment chief Richard Foster admits refuse collection remains a problem here, two years after the unitary authority merged the old district services. Everywhere else, he says, is sorted.

🎾 Serving Up Repairs. Scarborough's Grade II-listed tennis Clubhouse on Filey Road, built in 1912 and battered by vandalism, is finally getting a new slate roof. It is, apparently, one of the few purpose-built tennis clubhouses left in the country.
🔥 Don't Light Up the Moors. Last August's Langdale Forest and Fylingdales blaze became the biggest wildfire in Moors history, and North Yorkshire's new campaign is blunt about the causes: cigarettes, glass bottles, disposable barbecues. Some fires take days to contain.
🐦 Seagulls, Bins, and 2043. North Yorkshire Council has backed a £119,000 urban gull strategy for the coast, covering gull-proof sacks, new bins, and education. Separate food waste collections, which could remove the gulls' main food source, are not planned until 2043.
🚂 Beeching Still Haunts Whitby. Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume told Westminster that Whitby's six daily trains make hospital appointments nearly impossible to plan. Newquay, a smaller town, runs 15 after a £57 million investment - and carries 111,000 fewer passengers a year.
🚂 Miniature Trains, Maximum Cause. The Staintondale Moorland Railway opens its gates this Sunday, with miniature trains running on donation and trained Samaritans on hand for anyone who needs a quiet word. Cake, tea, and a tombola too.
