The council has spoken, and the motorhomes are moving on. The parking restrictions in North Bay and Sandsend are now a permanent fixture of our coastline. Despite a fairly vocal consultation featuring 3,000 grumbling responses, the trial has been deemed a success by the powers that be, aiming to keep our coastal vistas clear of "unsavoury" overnight activity.
Town centre life is also in for a shake-up as the council prepares to vacate Scarborough Town Hall and Ryedale House. By the end of 2026, staff will be based out of Eastfield, leaving the old sites to be reimagined, starting with 60 planned homes at the Ryedale location.
For those who prefer their coastal visits with a bit more drama, the Gothic Gathering returns to Whitby this April. Expect the usual spectacular outfits, but with a new town-wide programme featuring theatre and trails rather than a central haunt.

🏘️ Relocation from Malton and Scarborough. Staff from Ryedale House and Scarborough Town Hall are set to move to Eastfield by the end of 2026. The Ryedale site is already earmarked for 60 new homes, while the council maintains it will keep a customer service presence in both town centres.
🚐 Van Life Ban Goes Permanent. Despite 3,000 people grumbling in a consultation, experimental parking bans in Sandsend and Scarborough’s North Bay are set to become permanent. While Cayton Bay’s trial failed due to "repeated vandalism," the council remains determined to stop "unsavoury activities" from spoiling the coastal view.

🚽 Spending a Penny at the Pier. After structural woes shut down the old blocks, the council is rushing 20 temporary toilets into Scarborough and Filey before the Easter rush. It is a swift bit of plumbing politics to ensure visitors aren't caught short while wandering the West Pier or Royal Parade.
⚓ Turbo-Charged Harbours. Scarborough and Whitby could be in for a windfall as the government opens a £360 million renewable energy fund. The Head of Harbours is already courting the offshore industry to see how our local ports can snag a slice of the green energy pie.
🧛 Goths Descend on Whitby. The Gothic Gathering returns this April, proving you cannot keep a good vampire down. Expect markets and theatre across town rather than one central haunt. There is even a town trail for those who fancy a bit of mystery with their eyeliner.
🚠 Cliff Lift Hangs by a Thread. After 5,600 locals signed a petition, the 95-year-old lift has escaped permanent closure—for now. While the "fantasy" £5.5 million repair bill is being scrutinised, the council is binning the replacement bus service, which only carried ten people a day.
🍕 Pizza in the Park. Haven is looking to slice into the takeaway market by bringing a Papa John’s to Thornwick Bay. If approved, holidaymakers can swap their fish and chips for a "Thin and Crispy" without leaving the holiday park’s boundaries.
🎤 Soul Men and Sabbath. Whitby’s Royal Hotel has unveiled a stacked summer line-up, ranging from Ozzy Osbourne tributes to a 35th-anniversary screening of The Commitments. If heavy metal or Motown isn't your bag, there is always the Faulty Towers dining experience for a side of scripted chaos.
🏠 Coastal Comfort at Filey. The Principle Trust has opened a new fully accessible holiday home at Primrose Valley to support families with complex medical needs. The retreat features wet rooms and wheelchair ramps, ensuring a proper seaside breather is no longer out of reach for vulnerable Yorkshire youngsters.
🚗 Paving Paradise at the Abbey. A £250,000 bid has been launched to save tourists from getting bogged down at Whitby Abbey. The plan involves weather-resistant "cellular paving" for the overflow car park, ensuring visitors don't need a tractor to exit after a typical Yorkshire downpour.
🚂 Derailed in Hunmanby. Plans for 19 new homes beside the railway line have been firmly rejected. North Yorkshire Council cited a total lack of affordable housing and skipped healthcare contributions as deal-breakers, concluding that "noise pollution" and poor design made the site unfit for future residents.
