Scarborough Hospital's latest inspection report is in, and it's the kind that requires two reads. Medical care is up. Urgent and emergency services are down. Only 62% of A&E patients were seen within four hours - below the England average - though inspectors were clear that staff treated people well throughout. The system is the problem, not the people in it.

Elsewhere, the Scarborough and Whitby Green Party has had some pointed things to say about Yorkshire Water, after the water minister expressed reassurance about the company's improvement plans. South Bay was rated poor for bathing water quality last year. Yorkshire Water paid out £7.6bn to shareholders in the same period. Make of that what you will.

On the harbour, a Scarborough businessman has spoken publicly for the first time about the legal case that forced North Yorkshire Council to put £3.5m into Scarborough Harbour and £18.3m into Whitby's - with the claim the underpayment should be backdated to 1989, and more still to come.

🏥 Kind Staff, Creaking System. The CQC has left Scarborough Hospital on an overall requires improvement rating, upgrading medical care but downgrading urgent and emergency services. At the time of inspection, only 62% of A&E patients were seen within four hours - against an England average of 65% - though inspectors noted staff treated people with kindness and compassion throughout.

💧 It Stinks, Says Green Party. The Scarborough and Whitby Green Party has rounded on Water Minister Emma Hardy after she expressed reassurance at Yorkshire Water's improvement plans. The South Bay was rated "poor" for bathing water quality last year; Yorkshire Water paid out £7.6bn to shareholders in the same period.

⚓ The Harbour Money, Backdated to 1989. A Scarborough businessman has spoken publicly for the first time about the legal case that forced North Yorkshire Council to put £3.5m into Scarborough Harbour and £18.3m into Whitby's. James Corrigan says his legal team has proved the underpayment should be backdated to 1989 - and there is more to come.

⛽ Burniston Drilling Gets Its Day. North Yorkshire Council will decide on Europa Oil and Gas's application to install a 38-metre rig near Burniston at Scarborough Town Hall on 24 April - 12 weeks after the original meeting was postponed, and after the Secretary of State declined to take the decision himself. More than 1,500 responses have been submitted.

🚐 Ban the Vans, Move the Problem. Overnight campervan restrictions at Sandsend, Royal Albert Drive, and Cayton Bay have pushed motorhomes into Scarborough's residential streets - Holbeck Road, Esplanade Crescent, and Belvedere Road among them. Grey water is being poured into surface drains at a time when South Bay's bathing water quality is already rated poor.

⚖️ Thirty Years On, the Horses Wait. The Animal Hostel Trust has spent three decades rescuing horses in Scarborough - and now faces a £41,000 legal bill from the North York Moors National Park Authority after a six-year planning dispute. The money would otherwise have paid for vets, feed, and transport.

🚽 Town Centre Has No Loos. Since the Brunswick Centre closed, Scarborough's town centre has had no public toilet provision at all - and officers have so far failed to negotiate a single business into the Community Toilet Initiative. Twenty temporary units are on their way to the West Pier and Filey in the meantime.

🏰 Forty Million Visitors, Zero Scarborough Stops. VisitEngland's advisory board chair spent four days touring York and North Yorkshire, praising a region that draws 40 million visitors and £6bn a year. Her itinerary took in York Minster, Castle Howard, Rievaulx Abbey, and Thirsk. Scarborough was not on the list.

🕳️ Highways Robbery, Says Council. North Yorkshire Council says the mayor's new funding formula will redirect £4m of road repair money to York and leave the county £20m short over four years. Mayor David Skaith says the £268m total is a record. The potholes will be discussed at a combined authority meeting on 27 March.

🪵 Whitby Decking Gets the Chop. A retrospective planning application to keep raised timber decking at Kirkby House on Church Street has been refused by North Yorkshire Council. Officers found the boundary treatment harmful to Whitby's conservation area, with no public benefit to offset it.

🏖️ Iran War Sends Tourists to Whitby. Fears over Middle East flight disruption are driving a staycation surge, with one rental agency reporting bookings up 235% on last year. Whitby makes the top ten UK staycation destinations in new consumer research. Scarborough does not.
