Caravan Bid Blocked at Reighton

In partnership with

Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week ๐Ÿ‘‹

North Yorkshire Council has refused Haven Leisure's bid to add 17 static caravan bases at Reighton Sands, after existing owners objected that they'd paid a premium for unobstructed sea views and been given assurances that nothing would be built in front of them. The proposed site was a derelict building and garage. Sometimes the planning system works exactly as it's supposed to.

Elsewhere in town, the Clarence Gardens Hotel on Queens Parade has won approval for a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and gym - planners noted the facilities could help ease the hotel's reliance on the summer season.

On Westborough, the gold-gilded clock at the junction with Newborough has now been stopped for two years. North Yorkshire Council won't claim it, Scarborough Town Council won't claim it, and repairs are estimated at ยฃ20,000. The council that originally commissioned it was abolished in 2023, which makes it nobody's problem and therefore everyone's.

If all that's left you needing a break, the Sant Francesc Hotel Singular in Palma de Mallorca - a restored 19th-century mansion in the old town with a rooftop pool - is offering reduced rates on stays of two nights or more. There are worse ways to wait for the clock to be fixed.

๐ŸŒŠ Blocking the View of the View. Haven Leisure's bid to add 17 static caravan bases at Reighton Sands has been refused by North Yorkshire Council, after existing owners said they'd paid a premium for sea views and been promised nothing would be built in front of them. The proposed site was a derelict building and garage.

๐ŸŠ Blenheim Terrace Gets a Dip. The Clarence Gardens Hotel on Queens Parade has won planning approval for a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and gym. Planners said the additional facilities could help reduce the hotel's seasonal reliance.

โš ๏ธ Keep Off the Cliffs This Easter. East Riding Council has issued a safety warning after multiple landslips at Flamborough, mainly around South Landing and Danes Dyke, with an influx of visitors expected over the Easter break. Do not walk at the base of the cliffs or sit beneath them.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Nobody Owns the Broken Clock. A gold-gilded clock where Westborough meets Newborough has been frozen for two years - neither North Yorkshire Council nor Scarborough Town Council will claim it, and the civic society estimates repairs at ยฃ20,000. The clock was commissioned in 1988 by Scarborough Borough Council, which was abolished in 2023.

๐ŸŒด Reduced Stays at a 19th-Century Mansion in Palma de Mallorca. The Sant Francesc Hotel Singular is currently offering reduced rates on stays of two nights or more with code SUNNYPALMA. Itโ€™s a restored historic mansion in the old town, with a rooftop pool - an easier way to take in the view than climbing the cathedral steps. See the offer details.

๐ŸŒฟ Twenty Years Down the Garden Path. The Friends of South Cliff Gardens are marking two decades since a small group met on the Esplanade and decided the neglected grounds needed saving - the project ultimately attracted ยฃ7.2m in investment and reopened in 2023. New volunteers are welcome every Wednesday at 10 am.

๐Ÿข Council Buys Office, Forgets to Tell Anyone. North Yorkshire Council has pushed through the purchase of Resolution House on the A64 as a replacement for the town centre offices - elected councillors learned about it via social media and a press release. The guide price when it went to market was ยฃ4.5m; officers say the agreed price is substantially lower.

๐ŸŒŠ From the Moors to the North Sea. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has launched Rivers to Reef, a new initiative targeting pollution from Yorkshire's uplands all the way to the coast - Yorkshire's rivers drain one-fifth of England's landmass into the Humber. The first public opportunity to get involved is the Great UK Waterblitz, 24-27 April.

๐Ÿฅ New Care Hubs Planned for Scarborough. North Yorkshire Council is consulting on plans for new specialist care and support hubs in Scarborough and Harrogate, designed to modernise dementia services and reduce hospital readmissions. If approved, they will replace several existing council-run care homes operating out of older buildings.

โšฝ Groundwork Underway at the Sports Village. Willmott Dixon is now on site carrying out structural repairs to the 3G pitch at Scarborough Sports Village, with the new surface targeted for the 2026/27 season starting in August. Scarborough Athletic are playing home fixtures at Bridlington Town in the meantime.

๐Ÿบ Paint a Pot Over Easter. Mrs Pots' Pots is running pottery painting sessions across the Easter holidays, with morning, afternoon, and late afternoon slots on selected dates from 1 to 10 April. Message to reserve a table.

๐Ÿฆ Filey Is Having Its Moment. From a rebranded zoo to food, folk, kite, and Americana festivals, Filey is lining up a busy summer - and North Yorkshire Council wants residents to help shape the town's long-term future through a new investment plan consultation. Drop-in sessions at Filey Library on 14 April; submissions close 5 May.
