Somewhere in Filey, a seagull has worked out that Heron Foods is easier than fishing. He's been strolling out with flame-grilled steak crisps, and staff have been told not to intervene. His name is Stephen, and he’s thriving.
Closer to town, Cambridge Street was evacuated on Friday morning after an explosion at a residential property at around 6 am. Up to 70 homes and businesses were cleared, and two people were taken to hospital. Emergency services attended.
Out on Larpool Lane, plans for four high-end holiday units near the old Whitby viaduct have attracted a dozen objections, with neighbours raising concerns about road safety and the deer that use the Victorian embankment as a refuge. The council hasn't set a decision date yet.

💥 Cambridge Street Wakes Up Badly. Emergency services evacuated up to 70 homes and businesses on Cambridge Street and Victoria Road on Friday morning after reports of an explosion at a residential property shortly before 6 am. Two people were taken to hospital following the incident.
🏚️ Holiday Lets vs. the Larpool Viaduct. Plans for four high-end holiday units on Larpool Lane have drawn a dozen formal objections from neighbours, with concerns ranging from road safety to a resident deer population that uses the Victorian viaduct embankment as a refuge. North Yorkshire Council has yet to set a decision date.
🦅 Stephen Seagull, Career Criminal. A seagull has become something of a local institution in Filey after being filmed strolling out of Heron Foods with a bag of flame-grilled steak crisps. Staff have been instructed not to intervene.
🐕 Six Hours Down a Hole. Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team spent six hours on Friday recovering a dog from a 6.5-metre pit on the North York Moors, after the animal slipped through a series of tight underground gaps during the fall. Cave rescuer Lucy squeezed down to bring her out. The dog was fine.

🎪 Scarborough Gets a Fringe. The Scarborough Fringe kicks off the wider Scarborough Fair on 29 May, with street performers across four outdoor stages - Aberdeen Walk, North Street, Crescent Gardens, and outside Poundland. Daily performances run from 11 am to 4 pm across the bank holiday weekend.
🦞 Whitby's Fishiest Weekend Returns. The Fish and Ships Festival is back at the Marina Front Car Park on 16 and 17 May, with cooking demos, the Fisherman's Olympics, and a giant crab puppet built with local schools. The Whitby Lobster Hatchery will release baby lobsters from the East Pier on both days.
🎤 Stewart Lee vs. a Werewolf. The comedian brings his brand new show to the Spa Theatre on 1 October, this time sharing the stage with a sharp-tongued werewolf from the subconscious who, apparently, hates humanity. Tickets via the link or 01723 376774.
☕ £10 Gets You Three Months of Mornings. Whey 2 Go on Falsgrave Road is launching a coffee morning membership on 11 May - one free hot drink every weekday between 8 am and 10 am for a one-off £10 fee, valid for three months.
🍺 Wolds Beer, Asda Shelves. Wold Top Brewery - based at Hunmanby Grange near Filey since 2003 - has launched Alpine Pale, the first of four seasonal beers developed exclusively for Asda. Three more follow later in the year, each brewed with hops from a different growing region.
🐾 Filey Gets a Dog Field. North Yorkshire Council has approved plans for an enclosed dog walking area at Airy Hill Farm in Hunmanby, complete with a grass-infill car park off Filey Road. No objections were raised, and the council noted the site could be returned to agricultural use if needed.
⛽ Burniston Gas Rig Fight Continues. Europa Oil & Gas has confirmed it will appeal North Yorkshire Council's rejection of plans for a 38-metre gas rig near Burniston, and Frack Free Scarborough says its campaign is nowhere near over. The group is now pushing for a coordinated national effort to close the proppant squeeze loophole.
🍕 Pomodoro Eyes the Pavement. Scarborough's top-rated Italian in the town centre is applying for a pavement licence that would put six tables and a dozen chairs outside the pizzeria this summer. Representations to North Yorkshire Council are open until 26 May.
