🐦 Puffins, Cliffs, and a Giant Cuddly Mascot. The Yorkshire Puffin Festival returns to Flamborough on 6-7 June, with clifftop walks, boat trips, and workshops. 🏗️ £17.8 Million for Brownfield Housing. North Yorkshire's Combined Authority has secured a third round of government funding to build homes on disused land, bringing the total brownfield pot to £37.8 million. The subsidy per home has more than doubled, from £14,000 to £30,000.
🎰 Westborough Casino Stays Midnight-Only. Luxury Leisure's bid to run its Admiral gaming centre in Westborough around the clock has been unanimously refused - again. Police recorded 488 crimes in the surrounding area in the past year.
🚕 North Yorkshire Taxi Fares Set to Rise. A proposed five per cent increase in maximum hackney carriage fares is heading to North Yorkshire Council's executive after diesel costs rose 42 per cent since current rates were set last July.
⛽ War in Iran Hits North Yorkshire's Budget. The council leader has warned that the US-Israel conflict with Iran will hit North Yorkshire Council's finances, with road services, fuel costs, and bitumen for repairs all rising sharply. A new Crisis and Resilience Fund is being developed for low-income households caught in the squeeze.
👒 New Mayors for Whitby and Pickering. Sandra Turner has been re-elected as Whitby Town Mayor for a second term, while Emma Dineen takes the chair in Pickering for 2026-27. Turner described the past year as difficult but said the town is now moving in the right direction.
🗳️ 'Mayor of York' Jibe as Devolution Row Deepens. North Yorkshire councillors have warned that the combined authority is already failing after a road funding vote split 3-2 along geographic lines. The Mayor and both York councillors outvoted North Yorkshire's two representatives.
