Scarborough's Hospital Is in Trouble

In partnership with

Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week ๐Ÿ‘‹

Scarborough's hospital trust has told its own board that the way it currently operates is not sustainable - and backed that up with a ยฃ62 million savings programme. In April alone, it came nearly ยฃ2 million short of its financial target.

On a rather different note, the Open Air Theatre has quietly become one of the most successful outdoor venues in the country. This season it's lined up 28 shows - its biggest in 16 years - with 160,000 tickets already sold. It's shifted over a million since reopening in 2010.

Scarborough's most recognisable building remains a work in progress. The Grand is rated 2.4/5 on TripAdvisor and 5.1/10 on Trivago - up slightly on last year, which the owners will presumably take. The video doing the rounds suggests there's still some distance to travel.

If a change of scene sounds appealing, the ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton - a Grade II castle on a 20,000-acre estate near Ripon - is currently offering ยฃ100 credit per night toward dining or the spa. Worth a look if you fancy somewhere that isn't still working on its reputation.

All that and more below.

Why This Collagen Works Faster Than the Rest ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™€๏ธโœจ

For decades, beauty has focused on quick fixes: what you put on your skin. But the most radiant glow, strongest hair, and healthiest aging begin from within.

Introducing Pique's Carrara Marine Collagen, a true breakthrough in beauty. This first-of-its-kind formula combines Type I marine collagen for visible radiance with rare Type II collagen from wild Hokkaido salmon to support deeper structural resilience. Enhanced with biotin and micronized pearl powder, Carrara helps promote smoother, more luminous skin, stronger hair and nails, and whole-body vitality.

Designed for superior absorption, you'll see results faster than with traditional collagen. Its rich coconut cream base transforms your daily routine into something indulgent. More ritual than supplement, it elevates even your morning coffee or matcha.

This is collagen, completely reimagined. Not just glow but structure. Not just results but longevity. A new foundation for beauty, built from within. ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™€๏ธโœจ

๐Ÿฅ Hospital Model Is Not Working. York and Scarborough's hospital trust has told its board the current model of care is not sustainable - and launched a ยฃ62 million savings programme. In April alone, they came up ยฃ1.9 million short of target.

๐ŸŽค The OAT Breaks Its Own Record. The Scarborough Open Air Theatre is lining up its biggest season in 16 years - 28 shows, 160,000 tickets already sold. That's 35,000 more than the previous record, and the venue has now shifted over a million tickets since reopening in 2010.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ ยฃ20m Lands for Scarborough. North Yorkshire Council has approved the first ยฃ6.6 million in spending under the Pride in Place scheme, covering seven projects from the Brunswick Centre to a Men's Wellbeing Hub. The full -19.5 million endowment runs for a decade - the Brunswick's -3.5 million share is still conditional on due diligence.

๐ŸจScarboroughโ€™s Grand Hotel is better, but still not good. Rated a poor 2.4/5 on TripAdvisor and a miserable 5.1/10 on Trivago, The Grand has shown a slight improvement over the last 12 months. This video shows why.

๐Ÿฐ A Grade II Yorkshire Castle Is Giving Guests ยฃ100 Credit Every Night. The ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton sits on a 20,000-acre estate near Ripon. Credit can be spent on dining or spa. Check the reviews before booking

๐ŸŒŠ Alpamare Hunts for a New Owner. North Yorkshire Council has formally put the North Bay water park up for sale, including five adjacent development plots and a 4.7-hectare former amusement park site. Flamingo Land could stay on to run it even after it sells.

๐ŸŽญ West Pier Heads Toward 2028. Scarborough's West Pier redevelopment is on course for a November 2028 completion, with plans for retail kiosks, public toilets, and welfare facilities at the far end. The project has spent ยฃ1.7 million so far, against a total bill in the order of ยฃ15 million.

โš“ Wreckage Still Washing Up. Filey Library is hosting model ships from the 1779 Battle of Flamborough Head - intricate replicas of HMS Serapis and Bonhomme Richard, recently restored by a local resident. Pieces of the Bonhomme Richard reportedly still wash up at Speeton Bay.

๐Ÿฆ The Old HSBC Is Now a Bar. The Treasury Whitby opens on 8 June in the restored former bank at 4 Baxtergate, serving coffee from 8 am through to evening cocktails. The full restaurant will follow later in the year.

๐Ÿš— No Room for Granny - or Her Car. A Whitby homeowner's plan to build an annexe for his mother at Westlands Avenue has been refused, with planners warning the parking platform would clash with the surrounding boundary treatment and overflow onto the public highway. The annexe itself was also rejected as too cramped for anyone to actually live in.

๐Ÿซ Academy Plan Blocked by Geography. Whitby School's bid to join the Wonder Learning Partnership has been rejected by the Department for Education on grounds of geographical coherence - whatever that means for a school that only came into existence last year following a controversial merger.

๐ŸŒ‰ Grosmont Gets a Temporary Crossing. An ยฃ88,000 contract has been approved to install a temporary footbridge over the Murk Esk at Grosmont after the village's suspension bridge closed suddenly due to a foundation slip. Work starts Thursday - the bridge connects a tea shop and church to the rest of the village.

๐Ÿšฝ Filey Got Four Toilets. It Had Twenty. A local councillor is pushing for more temporary loos on Royal Parade in Filey after the permanent block was condemned in February. North Yorkshire Council allocated fifteen of its twenty temporary units to Scarborough, leaving four for Filey.
