Scarborough has a seagull problem. This is not news to anyone who has eaten a bag of chips within 200 metres of the harbour. What is news is that North Yorkshire Council now has a formal strategy for dealing with it - 5,000 peck-proof bin sacks, guano jetwashing, and a public education campaign - at a cost of £119,500.
Elsewhere, the North York Moors National Park has declared an extreme wildfire risk, with campfires and barbecues banned across the park and surrounding moorland until conditions ease. The moors are worth visiting. Just leave the disposable barbecue at home.

Eight new trips designed for families in search of adventure

🐦 £119,500 to Outwit a Seagull. North Yorkshire Council has set out its urban gull strategy for Scarborough, Whitby and Filey, including 5,000 peck-proof bin sacks, guano jetwashing and public education on not feeding them. The gulls have not yet been consulted.
🔥 Moors on the Brink. The North York Moors National Park has declared an extreme wildfire risk, banning all campfires and barbecues across the park and surrounding moorland until conditions improve. Visitors are still welcome - just without the marshmallows.
🎸 Killer Queen Returns to the Spa. The Queen tribute act is back at the Spa Grand Hall on 28 November for what promises to be another sell-out night of the full live Queen experience.
🏚️ Council's Builder Under the Microscope. North Yorkshire Council has brought in financial investigators to examine its housing company, Brierley Homes, after it forecast a £7.5 million loss for 2025/26. The company was set up to build affordable homes.
🛁 A Helmsley Spa Hotel's Spring Indulgence Package - covers dinner, bed, breakfast, and treatments. A Victorian boutique hotel in the North Yorkshire market town. There's also a heated outdoor pool and dining based around local Yorkshire produce. Check the reviews before booking
🚂 Steam's Back on the Full Line. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway's full 24-mile route from Pickering to Whitby resumes on Monday 1 June, after repairs to Bridge 42 ended a period of disruption. Grosmont, sitting midway, is home to the country's oldest surviving Co-operative store.
💸 Businesses Cool on Tourism Tax. North Yorkshire's mayor, David Skaith, favours a charge on overnight stays, but local businesses aren't convinced - and the council's own Executive Member for Open to Business has said so publicly. Edinburgh and Manchester already run similar schemes.
☀️ Leisure Centres Go Solar. More than 800 panels across Ripon, Thirsk and Whitby are forecast to save the North Yorkshire Council over £2 million in electricity costs across the next 25 years. That works out at roughly £80,000 a year.
🏃 Scarborough's New Ultra Challenge. Runners and walkers can tackle routes of 10 miles to 100km across the coast and moors on 20-21 June, all starting from Scarborough. Four distance options, one circular route.
🧗 Bag Retrieval Goes Wrong at Flamborough. A person climbed down the cliffs at Pigeon Hole to recover a dropped bag and couldn't get back up, stranded on a narrow ledge above the sea. Bridlington and Filey Coastguard teams deployed ropes and cliff rescue techniques to bring them back to the top.
🏥 Scarborough Hospital's £8.7m Green Overhaul. A new 1MW heat pump and over 1,000 solar panels are set to cut the hospital's carbon footprint by nearly 1,200 tonnes a year. That is roughly the same saving as the three North Yorkshire leisure centres announced this week, from a single site.
🎪 Streets Festival Finale This Weekend. Scarborough's outdoor arts festival wraps up today, with live music, theatre, circus acts and street performance across four town centre locations on Saturday and Sunday. No ticket required.
🌊 Open Water Warning After 12 Deaths. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has issued a water safety reminder following 12 fatal incidents nationally during the recent heatwave. Open water looks inviting in warm weather - it remains cold, fast and unforgiving.
🎸 Women In Rock Hit the Spa Stage. Hits from Blondie, Joan Jett, Suzi Quatro, Evanescence and more - Women In Rock UK play Scarborough Spa on Saturday 5 September. Tickets at scarboroughspa.co.uk or 01723-376774.
🪖 Eden Camp Goes Post-War. The Malton museum's new Modern Military Weekend on 6-7 June covers post-WWII conflicts through live re-enactments, veteran talks and interactive exhibits. It's the first time the event has featured in the programme.
🪟 Listed Building, Unlisted Windows. Filey residents Stephen and Joanna Draycott have been refused permission to install double-glazed windows in their Grade II listed top-floor flat - North Yorkshire Council ruled the six timber replacements would harm the heritage asset. They were trying to improve the energy efficiency of their home.
🍽️ FEAST Secured for Three More Years. North Yorkshire's free holiday meals and activities programme for children from lower-income families has been extended through a new deal with North Yorkshire Together. The scheme is funded by the Department for Education.
🏠 Holiday Let Becomes a Home on Love Lane. A seven-bed holiday let at 2A Love Lane, Whitby has been approved for conversion to residential use, despite concerns about the loss of tourist accommodation. The annexe can still be used as a short-term let if it sits empty long enough.
