South Bay Needs You On Sunday Morning
Scarborough 400 wants four hundred sandcastles on South Bay at 11 am on Sunday. Plus, the council was told to search again for harbour papers and a £5,000 tuna.

Now onto the news:
Families are wanted at South Bay at 11 am on Sunday to build sandcastles for Scarborough 400, and two hours is not a lot of time. Bring a spade. The plan was a world record, until someone counted properly and worked out it needed over a thousand - four hundred will have to do.
The information watchdog has taken a dim view of the council's filing. North Yorkshire has been told to go back and look again for papers on Scarborough Harbour's development, the chief executive's office included, having apparently not found much the first time.
Five thousand pounds for a fish. That's what a 300kg bluefin landed off Whitby went for, to a sushi restaurant in Jersey. Getting it off the quay took a winch, a set of trolleys and four bodybuilders, and the head alone weighed 40kg. No word on whether anyone here was offered a slice.
Twenty years after The Gruffalo's Child, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler have gone back into the deep dark wood. Gruffalo Granny is out and moving quickly, which will save somebody a difficult half hour in a shop before a birthday. (Ad)

🏖️ Four Hundred Sandcastles, Two Hours. Families are asked to come to South Bay at 11 am on Sunday to build sandcastles for Scarborough 400. A world record was the original plan, until organisers realised it needed over a thousand.
⚓ Council Rapped Over Harbour Records. The information watchdog has told North Yorkshire Council to search again for papers on Scarborough Harbour's development, including the chief executive's office.
🛣️ MPs Press Burnham on A64. Four North Yorkshire MPs have asked the new prime minister to prioritise dualling the A64, the single-carriageway route to Scarborough and Filey. In 2020 Boris Johnson said the scheme should be funded for 2025-30.
🐟 Whitby Tuna Fetches £5,000. The 300kg bluefin was sold to a Jersey sushi restaurant, the largest fish ever shipped to the island. A winch, trolleys and four bodybuilders moved it; the head alone weighed 40kg.
🌬️ Coast Chases Wind Farm Work. Local firms can sign up at meetings in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey next week, hoping for contracts servicing the offshore wind farms. Companies are already looking at basing crew boats at Scarborough and Whitby.
🎤 Sixties Spectacular Returns to Whitby. Paul Jones tops the bill at Whitby's 60s Spectacular at the Pavilion from 18 to 20 September. Rival festivals have folded; this one has grown to two weekends a year.

🏚️ Council Housebuilder Loses £7.8 Million. North Yorkshire Council's housebuilding firm Brierley Homes is forecasting another £5.8 million loss this year. It had originally predicted a £348,000 profit.
🎤 Savoretti and Morrison Play Scarborough. The pair headline Scarborough Open Air Theatre on 9 July next year, tickets now on sale. The 2025 season brought an estimated £8.8 million into the local economy.
🚆 Scarborough Line Hit for a Week. Northern has put an emergency timetable on the Hull line for seven days from today. A speed restriction between Seamer and Filey has stretched journey times.
🚄 Battery Trains Coming to Scarborough. Twenty-nine battery-electric trains will serve the coast, with charging equipment installed at Scarborough station. It will be the first time electric trains have run to the town.
🐦 Ruswarp Farmland Turned Over to Wildlife. Two sites near Whitby have become a habitat bank leased from farmers for thirty years, with kingfishers and herons returning. The ground signed over is the land farmers struggled to make anything from.
🏬 Bargain Shop Redraws Whitby Plans. The Yorkshire Trading Company has revised its expansion into the old Barclays on Baxtergate after objections from the civic society and council officers. Juliet balconies on the rear are down from several to one.
🍺 Fusion Seeks 3 am Licence. Neighbours and council officers have objected to the St Thomas Street bar's licence bid, citing noise and street urination. Officers asked the bar for a noise assessment in January; it has not arrived.
